Keep your Christmas cactus’ soil lightly moist from the start of the growing season in spring through to when the blooming period ends. Don’t let yours go without for too long, or it might turn wrinkly and even start dropping foliage. Watering: Although they do have the capacity to store some water in their fleshy leaf segments, Christmas cacti aren’t quite as efficient at this as their desert cousins. It likes a bright spot on a windowsill, but indirect light is mostly the way to go. Light: Although some morning or late afternoon sun is perfectly fine and probably appreciated, your Christmas cactus doesn’t need the intense light that desert cacti do. They’re a tropical forest species, meaning they like a bit more water and less harsh sun than their desert cousins. The problem is that folks tend to treat them like “regular” cacti, but as we’ve seen, they don’t come from arid habitats. Jungle cacti like the Christmas cactus are sometimes considered difficult to care for, but they’re actually not too challenging. They’re originally found in the same small area in tropical southeastern Brazil, where they grow in moist, high-altitude forests, soaking up the humidity, dappled sunlight, and balmy temperatures. So where do these parent species naturally hail from?īoth are jungle cacti (or tropical cacti), meaning they don’t occur in the arid habitats many of their other cactus cousins do. They’re a hybrid species resulting from crosses between two members of the same genus: Schlumbergera truncata (Thanksgiving cactus) and russelliana. Strictly technically speaking, Christmas cacti don’t have a natural habitat. It's a remarkable houseplant that can live up to 100 years under the right conditions! A Christmas cactus is a type of succulent that's named for the time of year it blooms-though it's also called Thanksgiving cactus or Easter cactus for the same reason. On both versions of the CD, “Summer Breeze” is paired with “Set Me On Fire” as a sort of high-octane organ-centric outro. (We’ll get to what they do on the original running order in a bit.) “Can’t Lose You” sounds like a gothic parody of the Beatles’ “India period”, but “Summer Breeze” is more like Ozzy’s cover of “Purple Haze”! Guitars distorted to the max, Pete croons about the jasmine in his mind. It’s a very long buildup, but this sets up their version of Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze” on the reissue. It sounds as if a natural side break was inserted after “Blood & Fire”, because there is a respite before the bizarre sitar-inflected “Can’t Lose You”. Some of the lyrics resonated with my sad-sack-of-shit broken-hearted persona that I found myself projecting. This is about as conventional as songs get on Bloody Kisses. Type O goes for straighter riffing on “Blood & Fire”. It’s really two songs in one, with “Frozen” bookended by “Too Late”. Of course one of those parts is a big dark dirge-y gothic breakdown. It has a lo-fi punk vibe and is quite enjoyable for all its disperate ingredients. “Too Late: Frozen” is another long one, distinguished by it’s goofy “too late for a-pol-o-gies-ah!” chant. In the quiet parts of the song are sounds which create the image of a gothic castle during a storm, so you have to give Type O credit for caring about their craft. A bit of a slog, with highlights here and there, but get to the point, right? In the booklet it is subtitled “A Death in the Family” and that’s exactly what it sounds like. The reissue and original differ drastically in running order here, but the more concise reissue blends seamless into “Bloody Kisses”, a very slow dirge that goes on for 10:56. The track was pointlessly edited down to four and a half minutes for single release, losing all its grandeur. It’s solid all the way through, which you can’t say for every long song on this album. This is a truly great song, though the naughty lyrics aren’t poetry. Guitarist Johnny Hickey sings the higher vocals in contrast to Steele’s ridiculously low baritone. If anything is Sabbathy here (besides the title), it’s the varied arrangement, the keys, and the Appice-like drums of Sal Abruscato. Each is a distinct section with its own riff and hooks, with “To Love God” being a soft interlude between two harder parts. A: “Body of Christ (Corpus Christi)”, B: “To Love God”, and C: “J.C. The nine minute track is laid out in three parts in the booklet. (There is also a deluxe edition with all the material from both, plus remixes, and their cover of “Black Sabbath” from Nativity in Black.)īoth versions open with the same song – “Christian Woman” – although the original makes you wait through 40 seconds of metal machine music and moaning called “Machine Screw”. The reissue, with only nine tracks instead of 14, is an overall better listening experience. I didn’t know, but I had bought a recent reissue featuring a new song called “Suspended In Dusk”, while losing a lot of the instrumental bits and novelty songs on the first edition. But Type O did sooth my angry, heartbroken soul when I hit “play” on my brand new copy of Bloody Kisses. Certainly, the comically deep vocals of Peter Steele were nothing like any of the higher-pitched crooners that Sabbath have ever had in their ranks. The gothic imagery, the heavy guitars, the keyboard accents. In fact a few months later, I saw Type O Negative with a bunch of Sabbath fans, and they couldn’t have given a shit. I wouldn’t recommend Type O Negative to any old Sabbath fan like he did. I mean, read this dedication in the inner booklet. I was also about five months since my first big breakup, and I was still bitter and angry. Knowing my infatuation with Black Sabbath, the cop-looking guard recommended Bloody Kisses. I had been collecting Black Sabbath for years, and in 1995 I was still mad for them, trying to acquire the rare stuff on CD like Born Again and Seventh Star. The year was 1995, still early in the winter, and fresh working at the Record Store (for about six months). The other guy had more the look of the cop-wanna-be, the way you picture the cliche of mall security guards in your head. There was Trevor Atkinson, the laziest guard in the world, who I knew from highschool. There were two security guys at the mall. We checked the racks, and we did - Bloody Kisses, the recent re-release in a smart looking cardboard digipack. They are one of my favourite bands right now. “If you like Black Sabbath,” said the security guy at the mall, “then you have to hear Type O Negative. "Tombstone" by Yang Jisheng, a Xinhua reporter and Communist party member, is the first proper history of the Great Leap Forward and the famine of 19. See Separate Article GREAT FAMINE OF MAOIST-ERA CHINA: Books: "Mao's Great Famine: The History of China's Most Devastating Catastrophe, 1958-62" by Frank Dikotter (Walker & Co, 2010)is an excellent book. Crop yields also declined because Mao ordered farmers to grow crops using the dubious practices of close planting and deep plowing. People went hungry because they had melted down their agricultural tools and spent time in the backyard smelters rather than in the fields tending their crops. Villager stripped remaining forests for food and ate most of China’s birds. Entire mountainsides were denuded to provide wood for the smelters. Millions of pots and pans and tools was turned into useless slag. Mao's followers were expected to chant, "Long live the people's communes!" and "Strive to complete and surpass the production responsibility of 12 million tons of steel!"ĭuring the Great Leap Forward, farmers were encouraged to make steel instead of grow crops, peasants were forced onto unproductive communes and grain was exported at the time people were starving. Some scholars claim Mao was inspired by the factories he saw in the Soviet Union, and the Great Leap Forward was an attempt by Mao to overtake the Soviet Union so that he could establish himself as leader of the world Communist movement.Mao hoped to achieve this by redistributed labor from large industrial complexes to small backyard factories modeled after 8th century smelters, where peasants could melt down their cooking pots to make high-grade steel. One of Mao's goals during the Great Leap Forward was for China to surpass Britain in steel production in less than five years. In his book “The Great Famine “ Dikötter describes how Mao’s personal competitiveness with Khrushchev - made keener by China’s abject dependence on the Soviet Union for loans and expert guidance - and his obsession with developing a uniquely Chinese model of socialist modernity. The Great Leap Forward come about at a time when: 1) there were still great internal political and economic struggles in China, 2) the hierarchy of the Communist Party was changing, 3) China felt under siege following the Korean War and 4) the divisions of the Cold War in Asia were becoming defined. Many of these efforts failed due to poor planning. Among its goals were redistributing land into communes, modernizing agricultural system by building dams and irrigation networks and, most fatefully, industrializing rural areas. The Great Leap Forward began as part of one of Mao’s Five Year Plans to improve the economy. At least 15 million and possibly as many as 55 million people died in one of the deadliest famines in human history. The widespread famine and appeared even in fertile agricultural areas. These factors combined and bad weather caused the three successive crop failures in 1959, 19. Agriculture was neglected and the Chinese people were exhausted. Normal market mechanisms broke down and the goods that were produced were unusuable. In the end industrialization was pushed too fast, resulting in the overproduction of inferior goods and the deterioration of the industrial sector as a whole. One of the goals was the maximum use of the labor force by dramatically altering family life. Deviating from the Soviet model, giant cooperatives (communes) and “backyard factories” were created. The Great Leap Forward aimed at make China a major industrial power overnight rapidly raising industrial and agricultural production. As part of the "walking on two legs" initiative," Mao believed that "revolutionary zeal and cooperative effort would transform the Chinese landscape into a productive paradise." The same idea would be resurrected later by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Backyard furnaces In 1958 Mao inaugurated the Great Leap Forward, a disastrous attempt to rapidly industrialize, collectivize agriculture on an enormous scale and develop China though the construction of massive earthworks and irrigation projects. Best time to golf in ireland6/12/2023 The nice thing about Ireland's consistent weather is that even in the middle of summer, the temperatures never get overly hot. June, July, and August are the sunniest months in Ireland and they are also the busiest with tourists. Summer: If your Ireland priority is to travel during the months with the best weather, then summer is when to go. Pack for the potential of rain, and you will be fine. They generally come and go and do not last long, so a glimpse of sunshine is always around the corner. The only caveat with spring is the occasional rain shower. Crowds are smaller in the spring, which is nice, especially at attractions like castles that have narrow stone stairwells and in the small villages where shopping quarters and sidewalks are small. The flowers in Ireland are blooming in April and May, so the many gardens and landscaping at the castles will be stunning for a spring visit. B&B Ireland is a network of B&Bs throughout the country that have been inspected for quality, and the network extends throughout the country. The rates for airfare and hotels will be lower, and you can find incredible deals on bed and breakfast accommodation. You can plan on comfortable weather and not as many crowds as the summer season. Spring: The spring months are some of the best times to visit Ireland. It is important to consider the factors that matter to you most and start your planning from there, since some things in your itinerary will be dependent on the time of year that you go. Summer has some of the best weather, and winter has the best rates for lodging and transportation. While the shoulder seasons in the spring and fall are great times to visit for the smaller crowds, each season brings with it unique reasons to go. If skies are particularly gloomy or rainy, you may want to invest in a wool sweater and keep your rain jacket and umbrella handy in the car for the intermittent rainy conditions.īest Time of the Year to Visit Ireland Colorful houses in front of St. The temperatures in the shoulder seasons are comfortable. You might wait in line for several hours at the Blarney Castle, for instance, just to go to the top during the summer tourist season. Smaller crowds are also an important factor while you visit key attractions like castles. In the high tourist season in the summer, you will commit a great deal of your vacation time to sitting in traffic. While there are a number of main highways to and from larger cities, once you get into tiny villages, your time in traffic becomes a major consideration. Keep in mind that roads in Ireland are unusually small. The shoulder seasons are ideal because the crowds are smaller, which makes a big difference for your time when experiencing attractions in Ireland and getting to them. The weather is cooler during these seasons, and since rain in Ireland is unpredictable throughout the year, you are not gaining an advantage or disadvantage with drizzle by going in the spring or fall. The best time to travel to Ireland is in the shoulder seasons, from late March through May and September through October. If you can extend your vacation and want to visit Scotland or England, combining trips with your visit to Ireland is a perfect opportunity to maximize your time and money.īest Time to Travel to Ireland Rock of Cashel in County Tipperary, Ireland Other factors, like crowds during the high tourist season, cheaper hotel and transportation rates in the low season, and mild weather in the shoulder seasons, are important considerations for planning your visit. Flowers blooming in spring at the Cliffs of Moherįrom the magnificent Cliffs of Moher on the west coast to the Ring of Kerry in the south and the capital of Dublin to the east, there are so many types of travel experiences to enjoy. The climate is fairly consistent throughout the year, so although the best time to visit Ireland is spring and fall, your decision on when to go may rest on other factors like what you would like to do. Cleaved caspase-3 was commonly found in a small number of granulosa cells (black arrows) in healthy developing follicles, serving as an internal positive control ( F). Numerous primary follicle-sized empty cavities were also observed (D, asterisk) and were shown to contain the remnants of zonae pellucidae via haematoxylin and eosin staining ( E, asterisks). The cleaved caspase-3 immunostaining was observed in the granulosa cells of primordial follicles ( B) and in the granulosa cells ( C, black arrow) or oocytes ( D, black arrow) of primary/secondary follicles at more-advanced stages of atresia. No competing interests to declare.ĪMH anti-Müllerian hormone atresia follicle development folliculogenesis ovarian follicle ovary preantral follicle. This study was funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand and the University of Otago. While this study may demonstrate a new function for AMH, the biological purpose of this function requires further investigation, particularly in mono-ovulatory species. This suggests that the role of AMH is not to conserve the ovarian reserve to prolong fertility, but instead to prevent the antral follicle pool from becoming too large. This study is consistent with prior studies showing that Amh-/- mice have increased primordial follicle activation but these new findings demonstrate that AMH-mediated preantral follicle atresia is a predominant cause of the increased small antral follicle counts in Amh-/- mice. The findings were shown only in one species and additional research will be required to determine generalizability to other species. Cleaved caspase-3 immunohistochemistry in Thy1.2-AMHTg/0 ovaries revealed high rates of granulosa cell and oocyte apoptosis in late primary/early secondary follicles of Thy1.2-AMHTg/0 mice. Despite this, Amh+/+ mice had fewer primary, secondary, small antral and medium antral follicles than Amh-/- mice indicating differing rates of developing follicle atresia between genotypes. These counteracting effects led to equivalent numbers of primordial follicles transitioning to the primary stage in Amh+/+ and Amh-/- mice. Evidence for increased rates of preantral follicle atresia was assessed by active caspase-3 immunohistochemistry in wild-type and Thy1.2-AMHTg/0 mice.Īmh -/- mice at 100-120 days of age had lower primordial follicle counts but higher primordial follicle activation rates compared to Amh+/+ mice. After confirming that follicle development speeds were identical (proliferating cell nuclear antigen immunohistochemistry), the ratio of follicles surviving beyond each stage of folliculogenesis was determined in both genotypes. The follicle counts were conducted for primordial, transitioning, primary, secondary and antral follicles in Amh-/- and Amh+/+ mice. Studies were conducted on female wild-type (Amh+/+), AMH-knockout (Amh-/-) and AMH overexpressing (Thy1.2-AMHTg/0) mice on a C57Bl/6J background (age: 42-120 days). Participants/materials, setting, methods: Our previous study showed that AMH-overexpressing mice had fewer preantral follicles than expected after accounting for primordial follicle inhibition but the reason for this was not determined.Ĭross-sectional-control versus transgenic/knockout mouse studies were carried out. Most prior studies have investigated the ability of AMH to inhibit primordial follicle activation. In 2017, all this became an official talking point when GoT’s co-creators, Benioff and Weiss, announced that their next project would be Confederate, an alternative history drama, in which the south won the American civil war and slavery never ended. As Dr David Wearing, an international relations expert and Game of Thrones fan says, “One episode ends with the blond, white Daenerys being borne aloft in gratitude by a sea of faceless people of colour, at which point we’re scarcely in the realms of interpreting subtext.” We have also been introduced to the Dornish, another dusky ethnic group from a distant land who are defined by hyper-sexualised and aggressive behaviour you needn’t be a dedicated student of Edward Said to decipher the creeping orientalism in these plot lines. Photograph: HBOīy season five, Daenerys has bagged herself a black friend (ex-slave Missandei, played by former Hollyoaks actor Nathalie Emmanuel) and has taken her conquering/liberating mission to Slaver’s Bay where she is hailed as “mhysa” (mother) by the freed slaves. Nathalie Emmanuel as Missandei and Jacob Anderson as Grey Worm. That is until Westerosi princess Daenerys arrived, like Stacey Dooley on a Comic Relief jolly, and civilised them all. In the east, or Essos, the Dothraki people were depicted as a nomadic tribe of violent, rape-happy savages. People of colour were not absent from the show but they were relegated to its cartographical margins. The majority of the action took place in Westeros, George RR Martin’s skewed spin on medieval Britain and the west, where the fair-haired, fair-skinned Lannisters engaged in a generations-long power struggle with the darker-haired, fair-skinned Starks. It was clear then that showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss envisioned their world as a white one. This much should have been obvious from way back when the very first episode aired in 2011. Yet there is one aspect that is yet to receive adequate attention: Game of Thrones – great show, but is it racist? In the time since it last aired, memes have been shared, elaborate theories have been devised and revised, bets have been laid (Lyanna Mormont FTW) and cos-play outfits have been lovingly stitched. T his month, the biggest TV show in the world returns for one final dragon-slaying, wall-toppling, throne-nabbing season. |
